Here are some questions people ask:
Do I have to compete?
No. We offer it as a great way to test your training as well as meet new people and enjoy your martial arts experience even more. We have recommendations regarding competition. Please see an instructor if you are interested.
Do you offer family classes?
At this time, we do to allow for sanitization and safety procedures regarding COVID-19. Normally, we don’t as kids need different focus than kids and we want it to be a stress relief for adults and kids. We also are unable to have spectators at this time because of the COVID-19 restrictions, so it makes it difficult for parents to train and keep an eye on their kids.
Will I get hurt?
Our goal is to create a safe training environment for everyone. When working with a partner, the goal should be for every one of us to improve and grow, not be tested throughout the process. We want to help you enjoy the learning process without fear of someone trying to test your knowledge to where you become injured. At this time, it’s difficult with the safety regulations to work with a partner outside of your family.
Will my child become violent?
Martial arts builds self discipline and respect for yourself and others. In our experience, we have never seen a student become violent. Part of our introductory process is to meet and get to know each student and find out their goals. We do not want to invite students to our dojo family who may be looking to be able to improve their fight game. We do want to invite people who are interested in protecting themselves and their families.
I’m out of shape, should I get in shape before I begin training?
Many people tell us they need to get in shape before they begin. That is crazy. We have had many people get in better shape because of their training. We also always allow our students to adapt their exercises to meet their physical level. Please ask if you need an alternative to an exercise. You know your body better than we do. We will help you set goals to be able to meet your requirements for ranking.
I’m a Black Belt in another system, can I just jump in at my level?
We are really proud of you for setting a goal and completing it. At SCS, we want you to feel confident in what you are working on. If you begin at SCS, you will start as a white belt, but will likely advance quickly through the ranks. This allows you to learn the required curriculum from SCS and be respected and encouraged by the rest of your “dojo family” at SCS. Imagine having a lower rank ask you for help with material and you cannot answer it or help them, would that make you feel confident in your rank?
