FEBRUARY GRADUATION

  • Exam Weeks:  February 8 through 24
  • Graduation Night:  February 25 | NO REGULAR CLASSES

1) How do I know if I am eligible for graduation?

Do you have a yellow stripe (electrical tape) on on end of your belt?  Then you are eligible.

2) What do I have to do to test?

Attend classes during the weeks of February 8 through 24.  You will be given two opportunities to test during those weeks.

3) What will I be tested on?

For each rank there are things you are tested on.  What you need to know for each rank is the CURRENT kata.

You can see details below about what is required for each rank.

4) How do I know if I’ve passed?

There are four black stripes that you receive during the months you are training for your next rank.

1 – Stances

2 – Kicking

3 – Fitness

4 – Kata and Self Defense

After you have passed and met the attendance requirement, you will receive a red stripe.  You will have two opportunities to earn your red stripe, but make sure you know your requirements.

5) I’m struggling with my Kata.

Have you used the app to help you? Under curriculum, most katas have a step by step breakdown of the kata with Renshi.  Most are also in mirrored and regular format so that you can follow along in the way that you best understand.  Some of our beginner ones also have downloadable printouts that you can use as well!  If you’ve exhausted all that, then let Sensei Crissi know you need a little extra help and we will try to connect you with someone to help.

6) When is Graduation?

Graduation Night will be on Thursday, February 25.

5:45 Lil Champions

6:30 Beginners 12 and under

7:15 Intermediates and Advanced 12 and under

If there is no way to make it, please let us know, we will do our best to work around it.

8) What if I don’t pass?

Don’t stress, we have another graduation in May and you will have plenty of time to learn your requirements.  Everyone earns their belt at the time that is right for them.

9) What do I wear to graduation night?

You must wear your full uniform (gi) to Graduation Night.  You may wear a t-shirt underneath your gi top, but you must wear your full uniform.  It may be the black or white uniform.

10) Who can watch me on graduation night?

We have always just made it an open area for everyone to come watch and celebrate, however, as with most things, COVID has made an impact.  We will ask you to complete a form where you can let us know how many spectators you expect.

RANK REQUIREMENTS

Many people ask us about rank requirements!

Parents are reminded that this is a journey, not a goal.  Black Belt Excellence is something you will carry with you your entire life.  This should not be a race to a finish line, but a commitment to a lifelong learning opportunity that has been passed on for generations.

Thank you for your support of our program, which endeavors to improve the world by impacting our community one student at a time.

As our dojo is not a McDojo where you put in your time and earn the belt, or pay your fee and earn the belt, we reserve the right to extend the time at each rank for any reason, including age, ability, fitness goals, focus, behavior in or out of the dojo, attitude, knowledge of material or any other factor that might arise.  We believe in every student we help earn a Black Belt and want to help them be the best that they can be.

This cannot be reached by handing over a belt just because they have paid the tuition and put in the time.

We are blessed beyond measure to have you as part of our dojo family.  Osu.

At each belt level, there are a minimum number of classes and requirements to meet before promotion.  Minimum represents the shortest number of classes or amount of time between ranks.  As we always want to help our students succeed, we may see that it is necessary for longer than the minimum.  At this rank, it may be that pushing them at their minimum would put them at a faster pace for a higher rank and would put them into the intermediate class with sparring before they are ready.  This would set them up for failure rather than success.

We will always do our best to determine the right path for our students.  Holding them back does not represent anything to us other than they need a little more time to be prepared for the next rank.  Combined, Sensei and Ms. Crissi have spent over 50 years in the martial arts world and always have our student’s best interest at heart.
