  • Thursday, May 24 6:15 pm
  • Friday, June 1 2:00 pm

*Please wear full gi so that we can have a group photo for the poster!  Thank you!

As a reminder, we adjusted the schedule not for our benefit, but for the benefit of all the students who were struggling with Candidate Cycle attendance requirements during the summer months and during the holiday season.  Our new, adjusted schedule has allowed for students to not have candidate classes through June and July, as well as November and December.  We appreciate your understanding.

We have done our best to accommodate the schedules of all. We have always tried to be considerate of other activities, sports, vacations, etc.  We cannot adjust things unless we know there is an issue and we also try to do any adjusting with advanced notice.  We apologize for the inconveniences we may have caused or any hardships this has placed on your family.  We have made many adjustments to our own schedules to accommodate others and our only goal is to make each student’s Black Belt Journey a memorable one.  Unfortunately, we will not please all the people all the time, though that Is what Ms. Crissi tries to do.

Here are the important dates for the remainder of this cycle:

A BLACK BELT IS…

Our Team — November 27, 2017

Our Team

SCS is a family owned and operating martial arts facility.  Each student becomes part of our dojo family.  We have many families who have spent several years training and working together towards their goal of Black Belt and beyond.

Sensei Sam Boyer has been training in the martial arts since 1985.  He holds a 4th Degree Black Belt under Shihan Jeff Sgarlata of Impact Martial Arts and Fitness in Syracuse, NY.   He also holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in TaeKwondo and is a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Brian Glick and Shihan Gene Dunn of World Jiu Jitsu United. Sensei is also a Certified Hisardut Krav Maga Instructor under Hanshi Moti Horenstein.  His continued passion for learning and helping others succeed has helped hundreds of students to build confidence, be safer, walk taller and live healthier.

Mr. Brandon Boyer has been training since 2004.  He is a 3rd Degree Black Belt and is the a Certified Hyper Instructor.  His favorite weapon is the bo and has recently begun competing on the national tournament circuit.  He also is a leader in the youth group at Destiny Church International.

Sensei Crissi Boyer, 3rd Degree Black Belt, has been training since 1997.  Her prior experience as a dance and acrobatics teacher and long time exposure to martial arts contribute to her love of working with kids and adults alike.

Rank Requirements — November 24, 2017

Rank Requirements

Many people ask us about rank requirements!

Here’s a form you can use to figure out when you should be eligible for your next rank and what requirements are needed to get to the next one!

Or, just read this below and figure it out for yourself!

This form is a tool to create an estimation of when you could receive a Black Belt in our system.  You begin working towards Black Belt when you begin the Solid Color Ranks.  Each student is different and should not be compared to others in regards to promotion.  Each student has their own challenges, strengths and weaknesses and are evaluated based on their knowledge and ability to complete the task.

Parents are reminded that this is a journey, not a goal.  Black Belt Excellence is something you will carry with you your entire life.  This should not be a race to a finish line, but a commitment to a lifelong learning opportunity that has been passed on for generations.

Thank you for your support of our program, which endeavors to improve the world by impacting our community one student at a time.

As our dojo is not a McDojo where you put in your time and earn the belt, or pay your fee and earn the belt, we reserve the right to extend the time at each rank for any reason, including age, ability, fitness goals, focus, behavior in or out of the dojo, attitude, knowledge of material or any other factor that might arise.  We believe in every student we help earn a Black Belt and want to help them be the best that they can be.  This cannot be reached by handing over a belt just because they have paid the tuition and put in the time.

We are blessed beyond measure to have you as part of our dojo family.  Osu.

At each belt level, there are a minimum number of classes and requirements to meet before promotion.  Minimum represents the shortest number of classes or amount of time between ranks.  As we always want to help our students succeed, we may see that it is necessary for longer than the minimum.  At this rank, it may be that pushing them at their minimum would put them at a faster pace for a higher rank and would put them into the intermediate class with sparring before they are ready.  This would set them up for failure rather than success.

We will always do our best to determine the right path for our students.  Holding them back does not represent anything to us other than they need a little more time to be prepared for the next rank.  Combined, Sensei and Ms. Crissi have spent over 50 years in the martial arts world and always have our student’s best interest at heart.

What is BBC? —

What is BBC?

At SCS, we want to set everyone up for success and help them achieve their goals.  We also tend to get very attached to our students and think of every one as family.  So, before you can continue after your first six months (in the solid belt classes), you must be invited to BBC (Black Belt Champions).

You may receive an invitation.  Here is some of the information you need to know:

How do I get invited?

Congratulations!

Your hard work, dedication and Black Belt attitude have earned you an invitation to join our Elite Black Belt Champions Program!

What is BBC?

Before you make a decision, you need to know a few things about this program.

First, Black Belt Champions is a team of individuals who are striving for and dedicated to excellence in all aspects of life.  This invitation is not given to anyone.  You have to earn it.

Second, to continue on in our program after your initial six month agreement, BBC is the only option because you will need a gear package to promote to Purple Belt.  Because we believe that the martial arts can really impact your life, we ask you to make a commitment to yourself and to our program before you purchase equipment.

What Does It Mean to Be Part of BBC?

Here are a few of the high points of being a part of our Black Belt Champions program:

  • Black BBC Uniform and BBC Enrollment Package (when you enroll)
  • You can come to three classes a week, but you’re not required to.
  • You may be invited to our Hyper or Jiu Jitsu Classes (no additional charge)
  • You can work special advanced curriculum during class.
  • You get discounts on catalog orders, holiday sale orders and guest instructor seminars.
  • When you move to Purple Belt, you are required to have all your sparring gear.  See Below for details.

When Will I Get My Black Belt?

Every student is different, and you will continue to grow and change in your strengths and weaknesses.  However, if you continue training regularly at your current pace (this date may be adjusted by effort, attitude, attendance or other factors) your Black Belt Target Date can be estimated using this tool.  It also helps you see what you have to look forward to!

BBC ENROLLMENT & GEAR PACKAGES

When you enroll in BBC, there is an Enrollment fee that includes some of the gear you will use on your journey to Black Belt.  To ease the burden on families, we have split this in two parts, or you can purchase the whole thing at once.  You can choose from a leather or vinyl package.  We recommend the leather for adults or teenaged boys.  The leather offers more breathability (for stinky boys) and a little more padding and protection as well.  The only thing you could outgrow is the feet, and they are the same in both packages.

This is a gear package.  Items cannot be priced out separately for initial purchase.  We often run specials on the BBC Enrollment and gear packages!

Enrollment Fee:  $299 includes upgrade from current program to include three classes per week, plus CMX and Jiu Jitsu (if invited).  One time fee.

Gear:

Leather Basic Gear Package includes Gloves, Shins, Backpack, Foam Chuks, BBC Uniform.  Approximately $220 value.

Leather Entire Gear Package includes Gloves, Shins, Rib Guard, Foam Chuks, Jump Rope, 2 Mouthguards and a Case, 2 BBC Uniforms, Head Protection, Foot Guards, Cup for Boys and a Transformer Gear Bag.  Approximate Value: $480.
